Four conversations about the moments that shape us: Dennis Yu on adversity, Matt LeBris on learning from failure, Dr. Lucy Johnson on small wins, and Chip Baker on the people whose example stays with us.

Encourage Mindset gives me a reason to ask people how they learned what they now teach. A good answer often starts somewhere personal: a classroom visit, a difficult lesson, a habit practiced over time, or a family member whose words still matter. Dennis Yu, Matt LeBris, Dr. Lucy Johnson, and Chip Baker each brought a different story to the show.
These conversations are part of the wider episode library already gathered on this page. Start with the question closest to your own life, then follow the original recording and its written recap. The show is the meeting place; the individual stories are where the people and their ideas come into focus.
Dennis Yu: from a college classroom to a conversation about adversity
I first met Dennis when he spoke in one of my college communications classes. Inviting him onto Encourage Mindset gave us room to go beyond a classroom introduction and talk about the experiences behind his work. He described feeling out of place growing up, learning English at school, and eventually finding a path into search engineering and digital marketing.
The episode centers on what a difficult beginning can teach someone. Dennis connects his own experiences with his interest in helping others build skills and find opportunity. That makes this conversation a useful place to begin the collection: it starts with the person, then follows the work that grew from those experiences.
A question to carry away is which experience has changed the way you help someone else. It does not have to be a finished success story. The point is to notice the understanding you gained and where it could be useful. The recording was uploaded to Encourage Mindset on April 20, 2025; the written recap here was published in February 2026.

Matt LeBris: taking time to learn the lesson
Matt LeBris joined me to talk about failure, reflection, and the work behind building a podcast and a brand. His own show, Decoding Success, makes him a fellow host as well as a guest. That shared interest in learning from people gives this episode a natural conversation about why some experiences change us and others seem to repeat.
One concrete practice in the recap is Matt’s habit of writing after a setback: what happened, how he responded, and what he could do differently. Putting the experience into words creates a chance to examine it before rushing into the next thing. The useful idea is reflection that changes the next decision, rather than treating every difficult moment as something to leave behind as quickly as possible.
Try listening with one recent experience in mind. What would you write down about it now, and which part of your response would you change next time? Matt’s episode gives that question a personal setting. Encourage Mindset uploaded the recording on February 16, 2025; the expanded article on this site was published on February 28, 2026.

Dr. Lucy Johnson: connecting a small task to a bigger purpose
Dr. Lucy Johnson brought an educator’s perspective to Encourage Mindset. Our conversation explored what happens when the next assignment or deadline becomes so consuming that someone loses sight of the larger goal. Her teaching and student-advising experience made the subject practical: how can a student see a piece of work as part of the education they are building?
The recap describes an alternative to waiting until the last night: spend ten or fifteen minutes on the work today, then return to it tomorrow. The point is not the size of a single session. It is creating a repeatable way to make progress and keeping the purpose of the task in view. That is a useful idea well beyond a classroom.
The article places our conversation in the context of pandemic-era online learning. The video’s June 22, 2025 upload is a publication date, not the day we recorded. I like returning to this episode with a simple question: what larger goal does today’s small piece of work serve, and what is a manageable first step?

Chip Baker: honoring the people who teach by example
Chip Baker’s work with The Success Chronicles centers on people and the stories they carry. On Encourage Mindset, he talked about his background in education and coaching, the value of ordinary people’s experiences, and the habits that help someone keep growing. It is a conversation that fits naturally beside a collection about the people who shape us.
A personal detail in the recap is the card Chip carries from his grandfather. That keeps the conversation about growth connected to a real relationship. An idea can stay with us because of who first said it, how they lived it, and the moments when we need to remember it. Chip also talks about doing the basics consistently and leaving something the next generation can learn from.
This is a good episode to watch while thinking about a teacher, coach, relative, or colleague whose example has stayed with you. What did they do that you now try to practice? That question turns appreciation into something you can pass along. Encourage Mindset uploaded Chip’s conversation on June 29, 2025; its written recap was published in February 2026.

Keep the conversation connected to the person
The four guests offer different starting points. Dennis tells a story about adversity and opportunity. Matt makes room to examine a setback. Lucy connects a daily task with a larger purpose. Chip brings the people who taught him into the conversation. Together they show why I enjoy asking questions across different fields: a useful lesson often becomes clearer when you hear the experience behind it.
Choose one episode, read its recap, and write down the question you want to keep working on. Then explore another guest in the archive below. The artwork, recordings, and articles are all parts of the same collection, so you can move between a quick introduction and the full conversation without losing the person at the center of it.

Where can I read the conversation recaps?
Each story links to its own article on this site. The individual recap keeps the original recording close to the written explanation, and the Blog gathers more episodes and themed collections.
Why do the videos and articles have different dates?
The recordings were uploaded to the Encourage Mindset channel in 2025, while these written recaps were published in February 2026. Upload and article publication are separate moments; a conversation may have been recorded earlier still.
